number one, nobody was able to change the tax code much at all because of the partisan bickering in washington. so if you're not going to have any tax reform, you're not going to have any simplification. second thing that happened was, i had this specific idea that for about half the country, everything you fill out on your tax return, the irs already got, your w-2s from your employer, the interest on your bank account. all that stuff's getting sent to the irs directly. so why do you even have to fill out a return? but it turns out, there are some people who want the tax code to be complicated. some of those are tea party folks who want taxes to be painful so that nobody will let the rates go up and some of those are in the accounting and tax preparation industry. and they don't want it to be so simple that their business would go away. so it was a bit of an eye-opener for me. but hopefully we'll eventually come back to this tax simplification because i think it's important. >> thanks, austan. >>> turning now to iowa and the search for two missing girls, 8-year-old elizabeth collins and 10-yea

running the heritage foundation is an important position in washington. a lot of influence among conservatives, among republicans. i'm sure he's going to have his work cut out for him there. you're right. it does give up that seat from south carolina. south carolina is a pretty red state and once there are elections in south carolina, assume another republican will be elected from south carolina. it's unlikely that in a formal election they're going to elect a democrat from south carolina to come to washington. hasn't happened in a while. my sense is that republicans will hold that seat eventually and whatever happens with jim demint. i was surprised that he decided to make that decision. we invited him to come on our show today and explain what's going on. i'm sure he's frustrated like a lot of conservatives are that president obama was re-elected for another four years and he worked hard to try to help romney get elected, help republicans and it's a source of frustration. a different challenge for him running a major think tank in washington and let's s
